Burger King Headquarters National CIW March & Rally

dsc08226More than 20 Florida YAYA members participated in the Burger King Headquarters National CIW March & Rally, which started on Thursday, November the 29th. Thanks to the United Church of Christ, we were able to rent a charter bus to take us to Miami.

On Friday morning, we joined hundreds of others in front of Goldman Sachs (one of the equity firms that have invested in Burger King). From there, we started the nine-mile march.

YAYA students marched side by side with farm workers, musicians, religious leaders and other activists.

It was a good opportunity for young farm workers to become friends with university students and other supporters…for NFWM staff to meet students and volunteers…and for the students to share with members of the faith based communities!

When we were feeling tired, the students cheered us up with their music and energy!

After walking for 9 miles, we arrived to the BK headquarters, where we heard very inspirational words from religious leaders, organizers and members of the CIW.

They also worked on a letter campaign to keep Methyl Iodide away from the fields of Florida.

Students demanded BK to support justice, fair wages and respect for human rights for farm workers in Florida.

A letter and farm workers’ boots were delivered to BK representatives, urging them to “walk a mile” in farm workers’ shoes.
