NFWM Statement: Recent Reports of Abuse Within the Farm Worker Movement
We are devastated to hear of the experiences of Dolores Huerta and others who have come forward regarding abuse while working alongside Cesar Chavez. We hold space for their courage in speaking out and for all survivors whose experiences have too often gone unheard.
We acknowledge the harm experienced by survivors and remain steadfast in our commitment to amplify the voices of farm workers and advocate for their dignity, safety, and just treatment.
The National Farm Worker Ministry reaffirms our 2018 Statement and remains committed to addressing gender-based violence within the farm worker movement.
We are also deeply moved by Dolores Huerta’s clarity and leadership in this moment—her willingness to speak honestly about her experience while continuing to affirm the value and impact of the broader movement.
As Dolores Huerta shared in her official statement:
“The farmworker movement has always been bigger and far more important than any one individual. Cesar’s actions do not diminish the permanent improvements achieved for farmworkers with the help of thousands of people.”
We will continue to stand with farm worker communities and support efforts that are centered upon justice, community progress, and healing.
For those seeking to better understand and address gender-based violence within farm worker communities, we encourage continued learning and engagement with resources that support education, accountability, and prevention.
