RECRECEIMMIGRATION REFORM & FARM WORKERSEVENTS

Leaders of religious and immigrant rights organizations are uniting to call on President Bush and members of Congress to enact an immigration reform law that establishes a safe and humane immigration system that is consistent with their principles.

Welcome the Stranger These leaders can see and hear the strength and the suffering of immigrants and their families. As a consequence, they want to see that our laws offer respect and dignity to the thousands of immigrant workers who contribute to the economy of our nation.
They are calling on legislators to enact legislation that includes:

1. The opportunity for immigrant workers who are currently contributing to our country through their work to regularize their legal status and over time have the option to become permanent residents and eventually citizens.

2. A reform of the system that is based on principles of uniting families that have been separated for so long; the opportunity for children of immigrant workers to fulfill their dream of achieving a university education.

National legislation that provides these guarantees to farm workers is the
AgJOBS bill, which passed the Senate in May of 2006.

According to the 2000 National Agricultural Workers Survery (NAWS), 84% of farm workers are Latino, and 53% are undocumented.
